Overview
Nyerere National Park, formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, is Africa's largest protected area at 30,893 square kilometers. Renamed in 2019 to honor Tanzania's first president, this UNESCO World Heritage Site represents one of the last great wildernesses on Earth.
Unlike most Tanzanian parks, Nyerere allows walking safaris, boat safaris, and night drives, offering diverse ways to experience wildlife. The Rufiji River system creates unique aquatic habitats where hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife thrive.
With only a fraction of visitors compared to northern parks, Nyerere provides an exclusive, uncrowded safari experience in pristine wilderness. The park is home to significant populations of elephants, wild dogs, lions, and over 440 bird species.
